Science that drives action

Identifying priority areas for Leptotila conoveri and Atlapetes flaviceps

The Andes of Colombia are one of its most diverse regions, but there are also a high number of Andean species which are threatened. Even more worrying is that some of these threatened species are also endemic, some with highly restricted distribution ranges. There is an urgent need to design conservation actions to protect the endemic birds of the Andes, however a lack of detailed information about their distributions and ecology hinders the formulation of appropriate conservation strategies. Two species for which this is the case are the Tolima Dove (Leptotila conoveri) and the Yellow-headed Brushfinch (Atlapetes flaviceps). In this project, SELVA will generate relevant Information to identify critical populations and habitats for these two species, with the aim of prioritizing actions for their conservation.

Our allies in this project are:

Project objectives

Evaluate the quality of ecological and geographical information available for Leptotila conoveri and Atlapetes flaviceps

Estimate rates of habitat loss and identify areas of remaining habitat for both species

Identify critical population strongholds of these two species in Colombia

Identify local and regional threats, to design effective conservation strategies for both species
